Why sponsor a child?
In rural Cambodia the distances of villages to High Schools can be huge. Around 25% of the students live in dormitories, many more live with relations or in monasteries as the distance from home is too great to travel each day.
In the dormitories students have to provide their own food, cook for themselves and wash their own clothes.
When we take a closer look we realise that many of them struggle. There is a constant challenge for any family whether to keep their young people at school or send them to work. Affording food, clothes and stationery for school work is challenging.
Some key points
- Average wage in Kampong Thom Province is $150 per month
- Farmers will probably earn less than this
- These students are all from poor backgrounds
- Many of them live in dormitories, where they have to feed themselves and wash their own clothes
- A school uniform of skirt or trousers, shoes and shirt is $15.
- Students try to take extra classes, they cost $1-2 per month per subject.
- We have a list of 17 students at the moment, out of 1250 at the school / institute
What we do
We are looking for £10/$12 per month to sponsor a child. Whether you can afford one month or a year we would love to hear from you. For one year, you can select which student you sponsor.
We do not make the decision which student to sponsor. We asked the deputy head teacher (who many students call mom and who knows them well) to select which students she considers to be in the most financial difficulty, with a risk of giving up school and not completing their education. Along with one other teacher they agree this list with the Director.
You can make your choice, if you wish – or just leave it to the Director and her team.
Below is a selection of students that have been proposed. The stories are pretty tough. Please read and give this some thought.

Her parents are very poor farmers, they are unable to support her study and living for her high school life. She struggles to have enough food to eat or to buy uniform and learning materials.

Because all of her siblings are studying, it is very difficult for her parents to support their children enough. Nowadays she lacks learning materials and money for her own school life and living.
Although her family is not well off, she commits to do her best to be a good student for all subjects. She wishes to graduate from a good university and to be a good teacher in the future.

For her life at high school, there are so many difficulties for her because her parents would like her to stop attending school and send her to work in a garment factory, She has committed not to abandon the school. To be ready for grade 12, she has asked some teachers to take extra classes without paying. Nowadays she doesn’t have enough money for food, or to buy learning materials and school uniform and to take extra classes for her grade 12.
In the future, she wishes to both learn at university and work to support her study. She has a very strong commitment and goal.

My name is Sakou. I am 17 years old. My parents have died. I have had to move to live with my brother-in-law’s family in another village. I like volleyball and football. In my free time I listen to music and help my relatives with some work.

She doesn’t have enough food and money to support her school life. Sakou does not feel hopeful, but she is determined and won’t give up.
After leaving high school, she wishes to study at the university. However, she feels concerned of her studying at high school because the bad situation of her family.

My name is Vothy. I am 17. My father passed away when I was young. My mother is a farmer who leads family great difficultly. I am a Liverpool supporter. My favourite subjects are Morality and History.

He abandoned the school once in grade 10 in 2017 because of his family’s situation. In 2018, he started grade 10 again and now he is studying in grade 11. Nowadays he rides bicycle from his home to school in the morning and rides back home in the evening about 20 km each way. He is a very gentle person and has a very poor life. He doesn’t have enough learning materials and money to support his study.
In the future, he wishes to study at the university. From now on, he will never give up again and he commits to try until he gets a good job to help his family.

Sok has already graduated from secondary vocational education, majoring in Electricity and now is continuing to study for an electricity and power, associate degree at the Institute.
He is finding it very difficult in his living with both learning and eating because his family is not well off. However, he is determined to be successful in his goals, so at least he will be able to earn money for his family in the future.
